I think anyone in real estate who has a negative or passive opinion on how important and useful a website can be has simply never had one work for them. Keep your design simple and spread the word on social media and you should see results, nice article.

Rob, thanks for the thoughtful comments, I must agree with most of them. I have not done a good job of following up with that post and with keeping that example at the top of the search engines. Having said that, my video and gregfly.com site are still tops in Yahoo and Bing, and the top site on Google is another site of mine. Not gregfly.com, but another site I set up last year, so it's not all bad news for me.

Also, I wouldn't minimize the video results, as many web visitors like to view video and it can certainly be a good way to get your name in front of a perspective client. And yes, I realize that looking only at the 500,000 number as a gauge of competition is a bit misleading, which is why I said, in the article, that it wasn't a good way to judge. If you prefer, when I search by your method, with an exact search, it looks like my videos and my websites pretty well dominate the first page, and that is without me having done any work on that keyword since I wrote the blog post, four or five months ago.

I think my real lesson is that I need to sharpen up my writing skills. My intent was to show people, who do not know how to move their site, or video, in the search engines, that having several listings for a desired keyword is possible. I certainly wasn't trying to claim to be the best SEO ever or that I would keep every keyword I ever placed well at the top of the search engines forever. Thank you for pointing out a few of my mistakes, and I will strive to do better going forward.

The problem with this is, the results do not last with what you are showing.

Almost anyone can get to the top and get multiple listings, but its keeping them there month after month that separates the men from the boys.

Looking at the results now, you only have 1 video result and 1 article result and your actual site is no longer listed. Almost anyone can piggyback off the authority of Youtube or some article directory for such a low, low, low competition keyword. I would almost bet you snag a top 5 listing just by setting up an EMD or squidoo article. Anyone can piggy back off someone else's authority. The true measure is, where is your site now?

You also are giving somewhat misleading info on the competition at 500k. You did that with broad match and not exact, which is the true indicator of competition. Try it with "Louisville expired homes" and you only get 106 results back.

Jennifer, thanks for stopping by! Yes, I am a fan, your sites are often the most attractive real estates available and I certainly enjoy helping some of your clients rank better for their desired keywords. I will certainly check out your new website and will drop you a note.

By being an active blogger and taking an active interest in different parts of town, and taking the time to write about it, I was able to generate a new client. A client who called me. Without any cold calling, or door knocking.

Really, you can't offer options to your client? I understand having to set up a separate business, such as a staging company or home inspection company, because it is a different service. But if you offer it as a part of your listing work, how are your higher priced homes being better served? I charge some clients $500 a month to boost their business in the search engine rankings. Why wouldn't a home owner prefer to pay $500 a month instead of paying 3%, especially for a big ticket home?

Our RE/MAX broker policy is that we are not allowed to package services and allow for a menu service option for sellers to choose from. Our position is that we are a full service office. So if I wanted to offer this to a client, in my city I would likely have to set up a separate business just for SM marketing with no affiliation to my brokerage or myself as a Realtor.

I think that we work so hard to build an online image that it is part of your marketing plan when you list these high end homes. Not sure that I would offer this as a separate separate service.
